Dugurd

– food and tradition in new and old times

The word Dugurd originates from the Norse word dagverðr or dugurðr, and is a meal that was held between breakfast and dinner in old times.

For thousands of years, Gudbrandsdalen and the surrounding mountains has served as a pantry. The rich and vivid food culture based on local produce is the main theme for the exhibition at Ullinsvin in Vågå, arranged by Gudbrandsdalsmusea.

In the exhibition Dugurd, traditional utilities from the kitchen meet similar objects designed in our time. Eight designers and crafters interprets traditional utilities connected to food and meal in an original way.

The exhibition was curated by Kirsten Visdal, and shown through the Summer of 2023.

Bread ‘n’ Butter

– a duo consisting of butter box and bread basket

Preg D17 –  an interpretation of “smørøskje”, a bentwood box that traditionally was used for transporting or storing butter. By using the traditional technique of bending wood, the top and bottom gets its characteristic oval shape. The butter box is ornamented with geometrical motifs inspired by chip carving. Traditional wood carving has been further developed and replaced by modern technology.

Bread basket

A basket is an object with carrying function and can also be used for storage, but is not suitable for liquid goods.

Wicker work and plaiting can in Norwegian history be traced back to early Viking period, and with its many shapes and functions it has historically played an important part in Norwegian everyday life. By comparing baskets from different periods and geographical areas in both Norway and Europe, much can indicate that the shape and function of the basket has maintained a surprising consistency over the year, with few new interpretations.

In the series Bread ‘n’ Butter, we’ve drawn inspiration from Japanese methods of wicker work and braided an asymmetrical and sculptural basket that contrasts the specific shape of the butter box.
